Rome, the eternal city, was founded thousands of years ago thanks
to a benevolent wolf and a fratricide (Romulus killed his brother
Remus). Nowadays Rome is home to 3 million inhabitants and is a
metropolis for commerce, art, culture, shopping, football and great
nightlife.

When in Rome.... Do's and Don't's
Do's
|
Don't's |
-
Take a trip up to Giancolo to see the sunset over Rome.
-
Drink the water from the numerous fountains - it is
completely clean natural mineral water that comes from
a underground source and is consequently ice cold
-
Tip the waiters approximately 10% of the bill as service
is generally not included
-
Take a trip up to one of the lakes - lake Bracciano
or Nemi are the most scenic
-
In November go to Frascati for the festival of "new
wine" or novello - when the water in the fountain
is replaced with red wine and everyone gets intoxicated
-
Go to the neighbourhood Testaccio for a meal in either
the pizzeria Remo's or Bucattino for an authentic Roman
Evening
-
Open Air Opera in Villa Borghese during the Summer
-
If visiting the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel you
should go as early as possible i.e. 8.00 a.m in order
to avoid the queues which by mid morning are often enormous
- Stamp
your ticket if using public transport -its not enough
just to buy a ticket you have to validate it too otherwise
you will be fined 50 euros on the spot.
|
-
Ask the concierge where the Parthenon is - that's in
Athens. In Rome they have the Pantheon
- Ask
why the Colosseum was built so close to the Railway
Station as a sneer often offends
-
If you get lost do not blame it on a lack of a grid
like street system
- Order
cappuccino after your evening meal as Italians consider
cappuccino a morning drink as it is composed almost
entirely of milk and as such is rarely drunk after lunchtime
- instead ask for an Espresso
-
Tell people off for smoking, in Rome a very high percentage
of the population smokes therefore smoking is tolerated
in almost all public places except the metro and on
buses.
-
Ask for a spoon to eat your spaghetti - if you think
you will make a mess just wear a bib by tucking your
napkin into your shirt.
-
Tip taxi drivers, Roman taxi drivers are notorious for
ripping off tourists so don't tip them - Romans don't.
-
Fill your wine glass to the top as this is a sign of
poverty - it shows that you don't know where the next
glass is coming from.
-
Don't talk about the Mafia
